Sometime last month I did this post about the early trend of tartan/plaid/squares/grids that was coming straight off the streets during Fashion Week. Well as expected, that was simply the warm up and we are now in full tartan heaven, with high street stores surely only weeks or days away from dropping their offering into store, to further spread the plaid joy. Like it or lump it, it’s going to be here for a while, so jump on board I say (with caution), but pick your print carefully and style it up with good sense, to avoid looking like Scotland has just thrown up all over you.
To roll like the Celine/Stella Mc Cartney plaid, opt for neat light coloured tartan knits or sweaters and maybe even combine plaids, a-la-Ms. Centenera, if thats for your choosing. Otherwise channel the Saint Laurent inspiration by embracing the grungey tartan shirt or baby doll dress. If this all seems a bit much, but you do still want to get involved, then there’s always the trusty old tartan sneaker, the Vans shape reinterpreted by Celine. However if Celine is slightly out of your price range, then give it 5 minutes, and surely Zara will have a more viable option in store for you.

So we are only just half way through fashion week month, and while plenty of trends have already started to emerge in some way, none seem to have done so with as much vigour as that of tartan, check and grid prints. We owe the big boys at Celine, Chanel, Stella Mc Cartney and Saint Laurent for this, and I highly expect to continue to see much more of it on the streets as we head over to Milan tomorrow and then Paris next week…
