Fashion Bloggers, Right About Now

Now while the interweb juggernaut is chock-a-block full of millions of fashion pics (and cat videos), finding good ones is still somewhat of a task, especially when trying to post inspiration everyday. Yes tumblr & insty are great, but at the end of the day there’s only so many close ups of denim shorts shots and Vogue-Jewellery-Flower flat-lay combos that you can handle before it gets really flat (badah boom tisch). So where to for the good stuff? And where oh where to for the different stuff these days? Well personally, I’m back (not that I ever left really) to some of my fav bloggers and some fresh faces too, so here’s who I’m currently checking in on everyday…

Who do you dress for?

The concept of dressing in way that is ‘man repelling’ is something I’m finding currently, quite relevant. If you’re not quite on my page, then let me break it down for you: Man Repelling dressing refers to dressing for fashion, in fashion, for the love of fashion, inadvertently  repelling men as opposed to wearing a form fitting LBD and patent pumps in an attempt to attract men. Think of it like this, if you were to run out and purchase a pair of the furry Celine Birkenstock sandals, what would be the response from your man/father/brother/male friend? Confusion and most likely a laugh accompanied by a condescending shake of the head. Now this is purely because most of them dont understand fashion the way we do and therefore their appreciation for it usually non existant. NB. I cant stress how much this is a generalisation, and I am well aware that there are plenty of men out there who would probably shame both me & Anna Wintour through their love/knowledge/understanding of fashion.

Some great man repelling trends include drop crutch pants, socks with heels, pyjama styling, sports sneakers with dresses etc. Check these ripping man repelling outfits and also if you haven’t checked out Leandra Medine, the one who coined the term, otherwise known as the Man Repeller, you should, cos she is the business…

The reason I bring up man repelling, is that I believe Ive been doing a hell of a lot of it lately, which brings me to my next point: Who do you dress for? Because Im pretty sure I haven’t been dressing for my man when I put on a washed out stussy sweater, oversized unflattering boyfriend jeans, chunky Isabel Marant sneakers and my russian fur hat.

So who do we dress for, and I mean really. Cos yes, Im sure on some level, we all dress for ourselves because what other people think doesn’t matter blah blah I know all this and I am definitely an advocate for doing & being only what makes you happy, but lets be honest, sometimes, we all dress or attempt to adapt our look for someone/something or even some place. In addition, dressing for men and women are two very different outfits, and I’m going to put it out there and say that I believe, most women dress for other women, most of the time. Yes.

A little while back I wrote a post about losing sight of my real style, and Im disappointed to report that this still appears to be the case, So having said that, I wonder who the hell have I been dressing for? And more importantly what shall I do about this pickle I find myself in, as you see, I do like my clothes (obviously, as Im wearing them) but it appears that once again, my own true style has become a little lost and I still am being drawn to the familiar (things i’ve seen look good on others) maybe over things I actually like. Hmmmmm, thanks Instagram and Fashion blogs, I blame you. How’s the irony in me proclaiming this to you… via my very own fashion blog… hmmmm

I suspect I could be quickly becoming another victim of a new more modern influence in dressing which I will label: ‘blogspiring’. Thats right, I mean dressing based on being severely under the influence of fashion bloggers and their instagrams. Yes person wearing senso boots, zara skort with a striped top semi tucked in, standing in a laneway casually looking down at your shoes acting nonchalant trying to instagram the right angle which includes all elements of your outfit, Im talking about you, because you are also infected. You, like me, are probably suffering from blogspiring…

Check these tell tale current (June 2013) ‘blogspiring’ outfit looks… nb. I added the date as blogspiring looks tend to change quite swiftly…

What do you look for in a blogger?

One of the most frequent questions i get asked, is where I get my images from and my response is usually to check the list of sites at the bottom of the post, as I always (99% of the time) credit each site Ive found the images on. I do this for a few reasons, mainly because the images are not mine (and I never claim them to be) and I believe in supporting other bloggers/websites in the hope that this positive karma will come back and others will support me and my site. But on from this, I began to think about why I go to certain blogs each day, and really if I think about it, choosing a blog that I like, well its kind like looking for a partner, there’s elements that are essential otherwise it’s a deal breaker. So what are my essentials when looking for a blog? Well…

Firstly, my blogger needs to be real. I like to know who’s telling me whatever it is they’re telling me behind the computer screen, so I like to be able to put a face to the name. I also like to see something different from what I’m seeing everywhere else. I like my blogger to have a really different and unique style, and showing me something that’s interesting. I don’t need to see an outfit post with another Kenzo jumper with a Dannijo necklace, Celine bag, boyfriend jeans, YSL ring and strappy heels.

Secondly, I like a blogger with personality and a sense of realism. I don’t need my bloggers to be overly serious and I certainly don’t need them to pretend their daily life is an editorial. Don’t spew out pictures that are so overly calculated or taken in environments you’d never actually be in (like perched on a drain pipe in a junkyard) its a blog, not a 6 page spread in Harpers. And while I’m on the point, remember what you are, a blogger. Not a model, so there’s no need for any awkward leans, irregular hair touching or ‘I’m just looking down at my shoes because I think I dropped something’ poses.

Thirdly, I like my bloggers to adopt the kiss principle. Keep it simple stupid. Just smile, keep it real, talk to me about fashion, show me some fun photos and that’s it. That’s all I need from a blogger. For all my other fash needs such as models, campaigns and editorials, I’m more than content hitting up Vogue, Harpers, Style.com and BoF.

Now before everyone begins to yell ‘yeah yeah, but’, let me say this: Yes, I put lots of pics up on my site of some of these very things, but I cant stress enough that when I do, it’s because I like or I think the outfit they are wearing is interesting and not because of anything else. Controversial maybe? Probably.

So here’s a few shots from some of my fav sites, because I feel like these people are real and just doing it for the love of the fashion…
