Consistency is the key in creating a solid good reputation while innovation within this, is what takes designers & labels to the next level and this is something that Alexander Wang know very well. The Balenciaga name is associated with a slick and somewhat futuristic theme, and Wang has continued this journey, now ensuring the house sits neatly on the line between Forward high fashion, futuristic sci fi and commercialism. A place otherwise known as the perfect balance.
This winter collection sees Wang’s wanderings into colour but adds an injection of air into each look, puffing up and rounding out the top half silhouettes some of which are pulled neatly back in by seat belt esk metal belts, engraved with Balenciaga Paris address, surely the new cult item of the collection. Skinny long legs protrude from below the swollen top, perfectly balancing out the silhouette. Texture is key in this collection, with a waxy shiny finish adopted as the running theme which was executed through multiple fabrics and treatments. And lets not forget to talk about the bags, styled and worn as shopping bags, because seriously, what a genius idea and way to get women to purchase multiple bags, I’m obsessed, already.
As a whole, the collection does seem to be a mashup of sorts, almost as though Wang has blended the strong roots of Balenciaga with his new direction, with some looks very typically true to the name while others (yellow paddington bear coat) seem much more born of the Wang mind. Maybe this collection was his way of creating a visual turning point for the brand. Or maybe I have no idea and have just read into it all far too much, time will tell I suppose…
